This month’s VCoM gives us a pretty cool nickname,
Stoney McGlynn. He played 11 seasons total, 8 years in the minor leagues and 3
seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals. What is interesting about McGlynn is that
he was 32 years old when he started to play professional baseball with the York
Penn Parks in 1904. If his career was based on his minor league stats he would
be considered a #1 starter, he only had two losing seasons (16-21 in 1910 and
4-5 in 1913) and went 177-109 in his 8 minor league seasons. His 3 seasons with
St. Louis were significantly uglier going 17-33 with a 2.95 ERA. In 1907 he was
just horrendous going 14-25, he was first in losses (25), first in earned runs
(114), first in hits given up (329), first on walks (112), second in homeruns
given up (6) and third in wild pitches (11).
This card is as ugly as McGlynn’s career with the
Cardinals, creases, chips and tears mar this card. The back, a Sweet Caporal,
is even worse. The back is cut off-center and heavily stained. But as I have said before, it is these imperfections that make the card loveable.
